DANGEROUS CROSSING -
07-09-2011, 07:43 PM
A woman was killed the other day while crossing mid-block on 24th Street between Eighth and Ninth Avenues. The event occured when she was attempting to cross from north to south on 24th at the speedbump in the vicinity of the path that cuts through the Co-op grounds at Pinwheel Park. Many people use this as a route to 23rd Street through the passage between the theater and the Broadmoor.
Everyone, especially the elderly, those who cannot see well or move quickly and those with children, should be aware that this is NOT a crosswalk. While the victim in this case was struck by a vehicle which was backing up, traffic going east on 24th does not have a clear view of this part of the road because of parked cars and the curve in the street. Likewise, pedestrians making this crossing do not have a clear view of on-coming traffic. Crossing here is extremely dangerous and should be avoided.
It's better to take the time and expend the energy by walking to the corner to cross 24th Street than to be injured - or worse.
