Chelsea Transportation: Past, Present, Future - 05-22-2009, 10:42 AM

The past few years have show quite a number of changes in Chelsea's transportation infrastructure. I thought it might be a good idea to document what is happening, what will be happening and what has happened in the past. Postings on the subject will be in no particular order, just what I have handy to post at any given time.

Bus Rapid Transit coming to 34th Street

There is going to be a series of workshops for Bus Rapid Transit. NYCT and DOT invite your feedback on where new BRT routes should be established and how they should operate. Join us for workshops this May and June. All workshops start at 6:30 pm.

Commissioner Sadik-Khan, MTA Executive Director Sander Introduce 34th Street SBS Bus Lanes

Enforcement along high-visibility lanes today, aided by cameras to catch NYC Taxis that violate the lane, will help speed cross-town bus service

NYC Transportation Commissioner Janette Sadik-Khan and MTA Executive Director and CEO Elliot G. Sander today announced that NYC Transit buses have started using new, Select Bus Service (SBS) bus lanes recently installed along 34th Street from 1st to 11th Avenue in Manhattan-the first step in a series of bus-mobility improvements planned for 34th Street to improve cross-town bus speeds and reliability. The high-visibility lanes, which will be enforceable by the New York City Police Department from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. weekdays, are part of a joint effort by the agencies to bring improved, SBS service to targeted corridors and areas citywide, and they are a critical component of the sustainable transit agenda called for in Mayor Michael Bloomberg's PlaNYC and in the DOT's strategic plan. In addition, the City is installing cameras at key locations to catch NYC Taxis using the lanes improperly and to issue rules violations to the medallion owners. About 30 bus lines use 34th Street, carrying about 17,000 local bus passengers and 14,000 express bus passengers daily, as well as a great number of private buses. Dan Biederman, president of the 34th Street Partnership, also attended the event. ..

The 34th Street Dirgible Port

The photograph on the left evokes a Golden Age of air travel. Dirigibles would cross the Atlantic, then appear over Manhattan and glide up to the Empire State Building. After a dirigible docked at the world's tallest building, passengers would transfer from airship to skyscraper, and an elevator would whisk them to street level. Through it all, New Yorkers would be treated to the behemoth hovering overhead.
The only problem is that the photo is a fake. The artful composite illustrates nothing more than the wishful thinking of financier John. J. Raskob and former New York governor Al Smith, the pair that spearheaded the creation of the Empire State Building in the late 1920s. Previously, the building was to top out at the 85th floor, with a flat roof. But the story goes that Raskob looked at a scale model one day and declared, "It needs a hat." After all, the rival Chrysler Building was crowned with a distinctive stainless steel spire. ...

The #6 and #7 buses on Broadway will be discontinued as of May 25, 2009. The bus driver said they are doing away with those lines and he has no idea if or how they will be replaced.

...the bus driver told me that the 6 and 7 were both being discontinued and he didn't know anything about the replacement. I was confused about the whole thing. I'm glad to hear that there is a replacement.

DOT Commissioner Sadik-Khan Announces that Green Light for Midtown Plan to Improve Traffic Will Begin on Sunday, May 24

New York City Department of Transportation (DOT) Commissioner Janette Sadik-Khan today joined Times and Herald Square business and industry leaders to announce that the City's Green Light for Midtown pilot program will begin on Sunday night, May 24, when Broadway traffic through Times and Herald Squares will be routed to 7th Avenue as construction continues on the plan to simplify traffic and improve travel times through two of Manhattan's most congested areas. Thousands of advisories about the project have been distributed, emailed and flashed on electronic message boards around the city in recent weeks to motorists, taxi operators, local residents and businesses, and the outreach continues through the week. DOT also announced the first schedule of events and activities in the new public space. The new spaces will provide opportunities to make Times and Herald Square even more exciting and attractive for New Yorkers and tourists and are expected increase economic activity for local businesses. During the three-month construction period, the public events will keep Times and Herald Squares economically vibrant destinations as work proceeds.

"Green Light for Midtown will make the street work like it should," said Commissioner Sadik-Khan "For the first time ever, standard grid intersections will be reconnected in this notoriously gridlocked part of the City, creating major traffic flow improvements on 6th and 7th Avenues."

New pedestrian plazas will be created on Broadway from 47th to 42nd Streets and from 35th to 33rd Street. The plazas will provide more than three acres of new public space for shoppers, office workers, and tourists, allowing for increased foot traffic - a potential boon for tourism and sales at local stores and restaurants.

"The Mayor has done a great thing by including pedestrians in his plans for Herald Square," said Dan Biederman, President of the 34th Street Partnership. "We are happy to cooperate by programming and managing the spaces that will be created when traffic is diverted. This is long overdue, and we think the office workers, shoppers, tourists, and commuters who walk our district will appreciate it."

The newly created public spaces at Times and Herald Square will be home to numerous events and attractions in the coming weeks and months as new space is created but before the project is completed, helping to maintain them as appealing, economically active destinations during the construction period. A preliminary list follows:

Herald Square

Reading Room
An outpost of the popular free "outdoor library" in Bryant Park, the 34th Street Partnership will open a reading room in Herald Square this summer.

Concerts
34th Street Partnership will provide weekly musical concerts.

Thanks for those wonderful pictures. We sometimes forget how fast time marches on and how quickly change is taking place.

23rd Street Transportation 1901 and 2009

This is a film done by Thomas Edisons company in 1901. In it you can see the horse cars and streetcars used during that era, plus in the background to the left of the lampost is the 23rd street station of the sixth avenue el.

Here are some pictures taken in 2009 at what I think was near the vicinity of the 1901 film. No horse drawn buggys here. However I did happen upon a Whole Foods pedicab (btw Whole Foods is offering free pedicab rides from it store on 25th St and 7th Ave this week only from Monday to Friday starting on June 8th.)

Outside Erie Railroad Ferry terminal, West 23rd St., trucks, lamppost visible.Bernice Abbott took this pictures on March 26th 1936 . I'm assuming this was the 23rd St Crosstown trolley of the Green Lines. 23rd St crosstown trolley service was discontinued on April 8, 1936.

Photos M23 crosstown bus taken at 23rd Street and Hudson River Park on June 15 2009.

Gasoline Station, Tenth Avenue and 29th Street, Manhattan. (December 23, 1935) photo by Bernice Abbott

In recent years Chelsea has lost it's gas stations at
23rd and 10th
28th and 10th and
34th and 10th

Currently Chelsea has 3 stations at:

14th and 10th Ave

24th and 10th Ave

30th and 11th

Of the three remaining stations:

The Mobil station at 14th has been sold for 60 million dollars.

The Lukoil gas station at 24th decided not to sell out to the building that now towers over it.

As for the Mobil station on 30th and 11th I don't know what their story is, however I can say a large apartment tower is going up across the street. And given that the upcoming Western Rail Yards project starts at 30th St, this is some pretty valuable land for use as a gas station.

So from 6 stations a few years ago we now have 2 gas stations in Chelsea.
