DOGNAPPING attempts on the West Side
There have been reports of attempts to steal dogs from their owners, by a man on a bicycle. The police think that this involves a man on a bicycle, who uses a razor blade to slice through a leash, and grab the animal - then uses another member to ransom the dog to the owner. ... [Read More]

RCN Anyone? |
Nov 18, 2008 - 7:14 PM - by Mookie88
Have there been any blogs about RCN? I didn't see any. How are people feeling about the cost of RCN service? I just went over to Building 2 to get my "free" digital converter box only to find out that it will cost an extra $2.95 per month. False advertising! The "Penn South Announcements" said, "There is no charge for the first digital box for current RCN cable... [Read More]

21-22 St. Courtyard Noise From 323 Boiler room? |
Nov 16, 2008 - 12:19 PM - by newsbuoy55
Does anyone else hear the noise in the 21st to 22nd St. courtyard area?
When it's quiet (night time and early morning) it's become quite oppressive.
It's intermittent and happens only when the weather gets cold.
Sounds like:
* air traffic
* standing under a highway bridge
A neighbor thinks it's the boiler room of 323 W 21st. St. and I... [Read More]

LONDON TERRACE - CHANGES?? |

A friend sent this neat photo of the Terrace being built. I wonder if it's the same sidewalk shed that we seem to have had forever.

Noise on 25th & 9th |
Nov 14, 2008 - 9:34 AM - by magpie
Several months ago they were tearing up the road because of a gas leak. And then it took several more months to repave the road. Then came the jackhammering for the repairs to the stairs on the church. Now it's the jackhammering that began at 7:52 this morning for the stupid bike path on 9th Avenue. It's been hours now and the jackhammering has been steady. Are they deliberately trying to... [Read More]

Are Rental Prices Plummeting? |
Nov 11, 2008 - 7:25 PM - by Jonathan
I just talked to a friend who started looking for an apartment back in June. She got so depressed because she was looking at skanky hole-in-the-wall apartments for $1400 a month. She ended up moving into a really ugly place with 3 roommates for $1700 and has never been happy there.
So with the financial crisis she thought she'd look again. She just called and told me she saw a... [Read More]

Cheap Living Guide - Switch Your Supermarket -- New York Mag |
Nov 09, 2008 - 1:31 PM - by JoJe
Maybe in 6 months or a year, the "Met" supermarket will be on the comparison list.
In the meantime, I am attaching the N. Y. Magazine comparison guide for prices charged for same items at Gristedes, Whole Foods, Food Emporium and Costco. Of course, Costco is going to be the cheapest because of their suburban bulk shopping set-up but anyway, it's... [Read More]

I Would Rather Have (?) Than Money |
Nov 09, 2008 - 8:03 AM - by magpie
This is just maybe a very silly idea but another post on the board made me think about what we consider important in our lives -- what makes us happy, what do we think would make us happy, etc., etc. Since this is mostly for fun (or can be very profound) what in your life would you consider more important than money or what do you wish you could redo about your life to make it more important... il Bordello? |
Nov 08, 2008 - 11:28 AM - by RobK

A new restaurant just opened on the southeast corner of 24th and 10th. They were open last night, anyway.
I tend to think of this as the cursed corner (nothing ever stays).
Has anyone tried this restaurant yet?

adding notices to occupancy agreements?? |
Nov 07, 2008 - 3:05 PM - by gretie
Since when does adding a notice to an agreement someone already signed make it legal? Yet that is what the latest notices about (homeowner's insurance and fines) management has sent around says to do. I'm not a lawyer, but this doesn't sound enforceable or proper. What would be the point of signing something if they could add in anything they want at some later date?

What are you planning to do on Veteran's Day to honor those who served our country in uniform? For example, will you go to the ceremony at Madison Square?

Obama Wins! |
Nov 05, 2008 - 6:51 PM - by phtp2

Yay!
I have a lot of confidence in Obama, and I think if anything he'll be somewhat more conservative than I or many others would like. I don't mind that, because I know he's coming from an intelligent, well-thought-out place. (unlike Dubya).
His campaign was stellar, and his demeanor during the debates was unflappable. That tells me he's a very capable dude. ... [Read More]

fines for non-compliance with "convector" inspection |
Nov 05, 2008 - 2:42 PM - by gretie
Now the coop is going to start fining people who don't allow "convector" inspection. 50 bucks for the first time and another 50 after that!!!! I don't believe that we are legally obligated to let them in.The inspections are an intrusion and they enter like gangbusters, spreading out into all rooms at once so you can't even keep an eye on them. I never signed the new occupancy... [Read More]
