  • No more giant cupcake sign @ Burger & Cupcakes...

Did anyone else catch this on Curbed today:

    http://www.curbed.com/archives/2007/...ng_cupcake.php

According to this, the giant cupcake on the Burgers & Cupcakes sign must come down within 30 days. I can't tell from the article if the canopy has to go too, but apparently the permit for the canopy expired in 2003. I guess the B&C folks didn't realize that when they moved in last year?

I don't know...I'm sad. As weird as it is, I like the cupcake. It adds some (more) character to the street.

You're not weird at all. I feel kind of the same way. I mean, when you walk by a giant yummy treat, it just brightens up your day. After all, aren't cupcakes a "happy" food? (I'm such a cheese ball. LOL)

Thank you, Chelseachick! That's just how I feel. Seeing something whimsical and cheerful on the block just makes me smile. It's a pity they have to take it away.

Oh No ! Don't take down the giant cupcake. I like to look at it when I walk on 23rd St.

Leave it to the city to be all scrooge-like. Can't they just leave us alone? Go bother Queens!

I couldn't agree more. That cupcake is so whimsical and inoffensive. Why don't these city "geniuses" go after those triple XXX neon signs like the ones near near Bed Bath and Beyond along with the sleasy, borderline pornographic manniquins clad in ligerie in their windows. I find THAT to be ugly, offensive and downright tacky The cupcake brings cake mavens, families and aother assorted sugar junkies to the neighborhood while the porno shops bring in perverts and possible child molesters. It is probably community board 4 flexing their so-called muscle. And, please, I am not a prude, I just don't like that Guliani shifted all these places from Times Square to our residential neighborhoods and that this still seems to be the trend.

I love the twirling cupcake, and I'm glad it hasn't gone anywhere yet. I love kitsch architecture of all sorts--it really gives a neighborhood a landmark. Ed Hamilton, that embittered crank who writes on BlogChelsea, has been tediously whining about what an eyesore it is, but really, it's just the sort of kooky thing I want to have in my neighborhood, akin to Eighth Avenue's historic neon signs.

Now, the restaurant itself is totally questionable. Its service is slow as treacle and it always seems to be out of half the cupcake flavors. I have grave doubts about how seriously it wants/needs to make money. But the spinning cupcake is a bit of playfulness in an otherwise staid landscape.

You know it's funny. The one and only time I actually ate there, I had a positive experience. I had a pretty yummy turkey burger. You are correct however, the service is like "could you move any slower?"

Otherwise, I didn't have any problems.

Also love the spinning cupcake. Kind of Retro-Kitsch.

I have yet to go into Burgers and Cupcakes (for fear I may eat everything in sight), but I did happen upon something kinda funny a while back.

People were gathering in front, watching them frost cupcakes. I moved in, drooling. One girl tried to drag her guy friend inside and he was like, "What are you crazy?" And told her, loudly, that they needed to go to Dallas BBQ if they wanted a real burger.

I think, as of today, the cupcake is still up. Maybe the city will forget about it. Or realize how utterly ridiculous it is to pick on a giant cupcake.

God, I want a cupcake. Right now.

Wow! I was just thinking last week, "the cupcake is still up, maybe they won the fight." Guess not. Damn, I never got to try their cupcakes.

Oh well, here comes another bank. Only because it's too small to be a Duane Reade.

If the city was fair, they will do something about the 4 foot high styrofoam coffee cup on the 14th st Dunkin Donuts. I doubt it though, DD has a lot of lawyers.

I thought you liked these nasty things Roby? What's the difference between a 4ft high coffee cup & a nasty pink cupcake?
