The "Hard Luck" corner has hit again - a big, though not major, fire at Il Bordello on 23rd and 10th.

If I were superstitious, I might think that corner had a curse on it. In 35 years, I can't remember a viable business lasting there for long. Anyone?

There are other "cursed corners" in our neighborhood; for example, the NW corner of 22nd and 7th has not housed a viable enterprise since at least the 1990s, when a coffee shop went bust there. Is it bad feng shui, or a bad landlord? (Of course, in 2009 we can now just blame the bad economy, but even during the boom years some boats were not floated by the rising tide.)

Any idea what caused the fire? As for that coffee place on 22nd... though I pass by quite often, I haven't thought of the long-gone coffee place in ages. I almost remember going there in the '90s (then again, if you can remember the '90s, you weren't really, oh, wait a minute). But for current coffee, JOE'S THE ART OF COFFEE (uptown side 23nd, west of 9rd) has it, and all other coffee joints beat though... seriously, their brew is consistently (I'm there once a day everyday) great.

That building at 22nd and 7th is being warehoused by the landlord, or something. The upper floors were never occupied even in the heat of real estate boom. Actually, I noticed recently that the cornice was drooping. A real danger if it falls. Time to call 311.

Sorry to hear about the fire. This is the first really nice place to open there in years. Everyone should try it at least once and give them some support. They are very accommodating, hard working, and the food is a step above some of the neighborhood fast food places and money wise a step below some of the fancier ones. It could potentially take the place of the sorely missed Chelsea Commons. I bet we could even talk them into an open mike or entertainment type venue. Very nice people and they've really made an investment in the space.

So to verify: It has re-opened, correct?

Apparently someone already called 311 about the drooping cornice. Below is the link to the official response:

I had dinner at Il Bordello this evening. If they had a fire, you couldn't tell. The entire experience was wonderful. The food was great. (I learned the chief was a woman who half Sicilian and half Indonesian.)

I had a wonderful flatbread appetizer with labne and a good Italian rose wine. Add to that a nice green salad and pesto pasta entree and you have a fine meal.

The decoration and live flamenco music add to the experience.

I hope this place does well. Recommend it to all.:)
