Whats the area like btwn 10th and 11th |

Hi
I'm new to NYC (and the US) and looking at renting an apt in 23rd st btwn 10th and 11th Ave.
Can someone please give me their honest opinion on what the area is like there?
I am single female so want to make sure it's safe to walk around at night, not too difficult to get around and get public transport at any hour etc.

I have lived in my building on W.15th Street for the last 4 1/2 years and have recently noticed an interesting phenomena. The new young residents moving into the building are really rude. I do not get it: I am not a prude-- raised my 2 kids here and they enjoyed playing in the back of the building which was designated for play use but really what I don't get is the way part of the area is being used now. They are finishing up our new intercom and I am wondering since it is in alphabetical order by name it may be harder on those illegal sublets to look up. I do know everyone will get a new code number but it seems it will be harder to look up people. I do not think there will be a list anymore with names on the wall. I heard today from two people that Bette, Amy Sacco's restaurant in 465, has been closed; one person had heard that the IRS shut her down over back taxes and that they also have a lein on her apartment in the building. Anyone know anything?

Huge Parking Lot on 26th & 8th |

Does anyone know how this came about? This parking lot is going to be huge. I am concerned about traffic and pollution across the street from PS buildings. Also, does anyone know what they are building right on the Hudson and 29th? There's a large crane walling off part of the Hudson river view, but I can't tell if it's a building or something connected with the helicopter landing. Thanks! Naiad
